Why Do We Need a Support Group?

Knowledge of having breast cancer has a huge impact on one’s life. Seeking out a support group is one way to adjust to this new reality of yours.
Some of the few ways a support group can help patients include the following:

  • The group helps the participant understand various aspects of the disease and how one can manage symptoms and other changes. The group also helps the patient survive the whole ordeal (treatment and its side effects).

  • Having cancer may introduce the patient to psychological issues like stress, anxiety, etc. The support group helps by suggesting a few coping mechanisms and helps the patient keep the mental health issues that stem from having cancer.

  • A cancer support group is also very helpful when it comes to finding relevant solutions for the socio-economic challenges a patient faces.

  • A support group helps you navigate through the sophisticated healthcare system so that you can treat your condition more simply.

The Lucknow Breast Cancer Support Group is an organization that exists to help cancer patients and survivors support their lives throughout their treatment as well as after they have been cured of cancer. The activities and programmes conducted to help with the same include:

  • Monthly meetings among cancer patients and survivors as well as doctors and caregivers to facilitate sharing of experiences and progress

  • Periodic educational talks to help patients learn more about their condition as well as spread awareness

  • Field interaction

  • Awareness programmes are conducted to educate the masses about breast cancer and the need to seek treatment as soon as you notice the first sign.

  • The support group also has programmes to provide emotional and psychological support to patients who have been newly diagnosed with cancers. They also encourage family members to support the patient during treatment.

  • Many cancer patients tend not to visit their medical professionals for follow-up treatment. The support group ensures that its patients complete treatment and encourage routine follow up.

Oct 19, 2019: Prof Anand K. Mishra, head of endocrine surgery at KGMU, said that awareness was the tool to combat the disease. “With awareness comes timely diagnosis -- at an early stage. At present, the majority of patients reach diagnosis centers only after they are past the first stage,” he said. A group of 65 survivors, including two men, participated in a fashion show organized at the KGMU convention center. “We wanted to show that life does not end if you happen to get the disease. Completing the treatment can win you back your regular, active life,” said Prof Mishra.

“The main objective of this program is to bring the patients who have already conquered this battle, in front of those who are suffering from breast cancer so that those who are struggling with this disease, will be motivated and will also increase their confidence to get their treatment done,” said the organizer of the event, Prof Anand K. Mishra, HOD of Endocrine Surgery Department."

SELF - TEST
AT HOME

A BREAST SELF EXAM.

A breast self-exam is a way of examining your breasts on your own to look for any evident changes. One mainly uses their hands and eyes to notice signs of anything out of the ordinary, in terms of the look and feel of the breasts.

If one notice changes after a breast exam, then one must consult the doctor regarding these changes to understand the reason behind them. We should remember that not every change alludes to breast cancer. There could be other underlying benign conditions too.

Why Does One Perform Breast Self-Exam?

Knowing what the normal is key for one to detect the abnormal. These comparisons can be easily explained to the doctor.

Breast self-exams aren’t ideal for detecting cancer, but women who report noticing changes in their breasts can help with early detection, thus preventing cancer from developing into further stages.

Are There Any Concerns of Self - Test?

Although doing periodical breast self-exams may be helpful, women who notice minor lumps may get anxious. It is important to remember that every lump isn’t a positive sign of cancer. This could lead to unnecessary stress until you meet a medical professional. To come to this conclusion, the doctor will recommend some diagnostic tests. Sometimes you may find out that the lump is not a cancer, you may feel that all the tests were unnecessary, and a waste of time.
One might also overestimate the benefits of the self-breast exam, and then stop going for periodical clinical breast examination by a professional. A self-breast exam might be helpful when it comes to noticing changes, but it’s the clinician’s examination that has more credibility.

Check signs and symptoms

Since breast cancer can occur to anyone at any time, it is important that you periodically check your breasts. It only takes a few minutes, and one doesn’t need any special medical training to examine their breasts.
Here is how you can do it in three simple steps.
Step 1: Touch your breasts. Look out for anything that feels out of normal or different.
Step 2: Look at your breasts. Stand in front of a mirror and see if there are any changes in the appearance of your breasts in shape, size, or color.
Step 3: If you are unsure of what you see, then check with your general practitioner regarding any changes in your breasts.
If one is unclear about how to perform a breast examination, it would be wise to ask your physician for a demonstration. Discuss everything you have to know about a breast self-exam, including instructions and techniques.

Changes to Look Out During
Examination

Here are the following changes you need to look out for while conducting a breast self-exam.

  • When you look at your breasts, look for changes in their appearance concerning size, shape, symmetry as well as the appearance of the skin surrounding the breasts. Check whether it appears puckered or dimpled.

  • Check to see the appearance of your nipples; is it inverted?

  • Inspect your breasts with your arms in different positions such as it being pressed on your hips, raised over your head etc.

  • Lift your breasts and examine the ridges under your breasts; do they appear symmetrical?

  • While using your hands, feel for any lump.

You may also seek the help of a trusted friend or a close family member if you are unable to make a proper examination.

Seeking Professional Help

If one is unclear about how to perform a breast exam, it would be wise to ask your personal physician for a demonstration. Discuss everything you have to know about a breast self-exam, including instructions and technique.

If you are a woman who undergoes menstruation, then pick a time in your cycle when your breasts are the least tender. This is because hormone fluctuation that occurs during a menstrual cycle affects the breast tissues. The ideal time to perform a self breast exam would be a week after your menstrual period. There are many signs and symptoms that your body shows when you have cancer. Look out for such signs and symptoms, and immediately seek treatment if you notice anything different in your body.
